چکیده

We present the results of a follow–up ASCA observation and multicolour optical and near-infrared photometry carried out at the 3.5-m Italian National Telescope Galileo of SAXJ 1353.9+1820. This object, serendipitously discovered by BeppoSAX in the 5–10 keV band, has been spectroscopically identified as a red quasar at z=0.217. The combined X–ray and optical–infrared data reveal the presence of a moderately luminous X–ray source (∼ 10 erg s) obscured by a column density of the order of 10 cm in a otherwise optically passive early-type galaxy. The implications for the nature of red quasars and their possible contribution to the hard X–ray background are briefly outlined.

Multi - wavelength observations of serendipitous Chandra X - ray sources in the field of A 2390

We present optical spectra and near-infrared imaging of a sample of serendipitous X-ray sources detected in the field of Chandra observations of the A 2390 cluster of galaxies. The sources have 0.5-7 keV fluxes of 0.6 − 8 × 10 −14 erg cm −2 s −1 and lie around the break in the 2-10 keV source counts. They therefore are typical of sources dominating the X-ray Background in that band. Twelve of t...

XMM‐Newton Observations of the Red Type 1.8 Quasar 2M1049+5837: Reflection from Cold and Warm (Ionized) Matter

Chandra observations of the type 1.8, low-redshift (z 1⁄4 0:115), red (J KS 2) quasar 2MASSJ 104943+583750 (2M1049+5837) indicated an unusually hardX-ray spectrum (HR 0:6), suggesting obscuration ofNH 4 ; 10 cm 2 and a flat 0:4 power-law slope. A higher signal-to-noise ratio XMM-Newton observation reported here reveals a more complex spectrum, being extremely hard above 2 keV, 0:6, with a well-...

Optical and Near–infrared Spectroscopy of a High–redshift, Hard X–ray Emitting Spiral Galaxy

We present optical and near–infrared Keck spectroscopy of CXOHDFN J123635.6+621424 (hereafter HDFX28), a hard X–ray source at a redshift of z = 2.011 in the flanking fields of the Hubble Deep Field– North (HDF–N). HDFX28 is a red source (R − Ks = 4.74) with extended steep–spectrum (α 8.4 GHz

XMM–Newton observations of Extremely Red Objects and the link with luminous, X–ray obscured Quasars

We present the results of a deep (about 80 ks) XMM-Newton survey of the largest sample of near-infrared selected Extremely Red Objects (R−K> 5) available to date to KS ∼ < 19.2. At the relatively bright X-ray fluxes (F2−10keV ∼ > 4× 10 erg cm s) and near-infrared magnitude probed by the present observations, the fraction of AGN (i.e., X–ray detected) among the ERO population is small (∼3.5%); c...

Multi-wavelength Observations of the 2002 Outburst of Gx 339–4: Two Patterns of X-ray–optical/near-infrared Behavior

We report on quasi-simultaneous Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer and optical/near-infrared (nIR) observations of the black hole candidate X-ray transient GX 339–4. Our observations were made over a time span of more than eight months in 2002 and cover the initial rise and transition from a hard to a soft spectral state in X-rays. Two distinct patterns of correlated X-ray–optical/nIR behavior were fo...
